ABOUT
COMMUNITY SCHOOL
Beatrice
Lieben, Ph.D. founded The Community School in 1968 to serve the
bright child with learning and attentional disabilities. For
over 30 years the school's primary goal has been to help children achieve
a level of performance in the classroom that is fully commensurate with
their abilities, intellects and talents. The Lower School program provides
children in grades K-8 with skilled remedial help and challenging academic
experience.
Through
small group instruction and innovative teaching, the program
offers exposure to the wide range of information and activities available
in the educational mainstream. It provides:
-
Remediation
in basic skills, handwriting, speech and language, perceptual-motor
skills and cognitive functioning
-
A
full academic curriculum in which challenging and age-appropriate content
is taught in ways that ensure learning
-
Exposure
to and development of skills in the arts, athletics, computer science
and other areas, contributing to a sense of competence and development
of lifelong interests and hobbies
-
Interventions
for resolving behavioral and emotional problems that often accompany
learning disabilities
An
encouragement curriculum, "Unlocking Learning Power," which helps
the students to understand learning disabilities, develop coping mechanisms
and become self advocates
Community
School enrolls nearly 135 students, ages 5-14, privately and publicly
funded, from as many as 73 sending public school districts throughout five
New Jersey counties as well as New York City and Rockland and Westchester
counties in New York State. They are children of diverse cultural, ethnic
and socioeconomic backgrounds who are admitted on the basis of learning
potential and academic needs. Sending districts provide transportation.
All
of our students have average or above average potential. However, each of
our students experiences a gap between his or her potential and performance,
exhibiting varied deficits, including hyperactivity, speech and language
impairment, dyslexia, and other social and academic delays. Our goal at
Community High School is to provide innovative instruction built
on each child's strengths in order to bridge the gaps created by
these deficits.
