LANGUAGE TRAINING PROGRAM
The Orton-Gillingham Method
Since it's inception, Community High School has specialized in working with students whose disabilities affect the language process.
Our language-training curriculum has its roots in the early works of Dr. Samuel Orton, a neuro-psychiatrist and pathologist who, along with Anna Gillingham, noted educator and psychologist, developed the Orton-Gillingham approach.
The Orton-Gillingham approach offers a structured language program for students with dyslexia who have not learned to read, write or spell using the traditional methods.
This program is based on building a network of sound-symbol associations using visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile modalities - a multi-sensory approach.
Characteristics often associated with dyslexia are addressed throughout the program, including difficulty in decoding and encoding, difficulty in reading words in isolation, difficulty in expressing thoughts in written form, poor receptive language, poor verbal expression, confusion about directionality and spatial orientation and difficulty with handwriting.
